It’s easy to feel a little overwhelmed right now. Our lives have drastically changed over the past few weeks. We have been asked to stay at home, work from home if we can and for some of us, homeschool our children. Our new world order right now is far from normality for everyone.
It’s also understandable your children are feeling a little anxious too. For those of school age, not seeing their friends each day and doing the activities they would normally do like playing sports, can take its toll.
But this is only temporary, and we need to work together to limit our social outings, keep the kids and ourselves happy and generally, how we look at it at Tiny Terrors, slow life right down.
As parents, the school closures have most of us wondering how we can keep our little one’s minds and bodies active at home. During these uncertain times, it is crucial to provide some structure and routine for your children at home whilst in self-isolation. It is also important to look for positive learning experiences and fun for yourself and your children.
Here are some of our tips:
Even though children have school holidays, it is better to establish some routine so that they do not become unmotivated and lethargic. Set a proper morning and bedtime for your kids. Have your meals together at the dinner table and talk to them about their lives, their interests, and disinterests.
Tell them about your life too, anything that your child is interested to know about you. Try to be more open with your kids in this time of confusion and fear. Children may have a lot of questions, and it is better to address them positively.
If they are taking online classes, ensure that they get some physical activity after the classes. Plan some simple indoor activities that get them moving. There are plenty of simple exercise videos on social media platforms and YouTube.
Find a fun routine for you to do with your children every day that gets your heart rate up and your body moving. They can simply join in you doing yoga or Zumba dance. This way, your physical health stays well maintained, and your children’s fun time isn’t also compromised!
You can also try out new and creative activities to do with your kids at home. You can start by teaching your children the basics of cooking and baking. Simple one-pot meals or an easy to bake muffin recipe is not only fun but can also be very therapeutic.
You can also set up a small art room or area for your children. Get them to start being creative by drawing, painting, or sculpting. Arts and crafts are an amazing way to pass time while learning new skills. There are many DIY projects and cool origami techniques available on the internet.
Encourage reading books and storytelling to your children as well. Watching cartoons and movies may be fun but listening to a bedtime story still holds its own charm. If your children are insisting on watching television, try to get them interested in more informative and educational programs such as BTN (Behind the news)
Many things can be done from the comfort of your homes. It is important to realise that no matter how difficult things may seem, this too shall pass. Use this time to slow down and enjoy the simpler things in life while we wait for better days to come.
