DIY gift ideas for Mother’s Day 2022

mothers day gift ideas DIY

We know that every Mother’s Day gift from our kids is a special gift, whatever it is, whatever the cost. But, from experience, the gifts with the longest shelf-life and that tend to tug a little more at mum’s heart-strings are the gifts that our little ones have made with their own little hands.

A handmade or do-it-yourself (DIY) gift is a sure-fire way to put a smile on mum’s face this Mother’s Day – Sunday, 8th May.

We’re collected our favourite DIY gift ideas to share and inspire you this Mother’s Day 2022.

Sharpie Dyed Coasters

These Sharpie Dyed Coasters from One Little Project are hard to beat in the fun-to-make and gift category! Think of all the potential! Each one turns into a unique piece of artwork that looks shockingly good on the coffee table!

Here’s what you need:

  • Sharpie Fine Tip Markers (in bold colours)
  • Small White Ceramic Tiles
  • Isopropyl Alcohol (91% or 99%)
  • Eye Dropper
  • Polyurethane top coat
  • Peel and Stick Black Felt Stickers

Instructions:

  1. Wipe the tile clean with a damp cloth.
  2. Colour the tile with Sharpies with bold and contrasting colours. Don’t worry if it’s messy, if the colours overlap or if there’s white space showing.
  3. Using an eye dropper, carefully drop the rubbing alcohol onto the coloured tile.
  4. Allow the tile to dry for at least 40 minutes.
  5. Using a small paintbrush, gently cover the top of the tile with a polyurethane top coat to seal in the colour. Allow to set for 24 hours.
  6. Use the felt stickers to stick to the bottom of the tile.

Flowerpot Wind Chime

Your mum will love sitting in her garden listening to the sweet sounds of her very own Flowerpot Wind Chime. An easy DIY idea from Thimble & Twig, this unique craft for kids is a sweet way to decorate your garden.

What you’ll need:

  • Terracotta pots
  • Paints (preferably acrylic as it’s more hard wearing outside)
  • Paintbrushes
  • String or ribbon
  • Beads, buttons, and bells

Instructions:

  • Paint your pots as you wish.
  • Whilst the paint is drying, cut your string or ribbon into lengths of around 30cm – 40cm.
  • Thread a mixture of beads, buttons and bells onto your string or ribbon leaving about 10cm at the end for tying.
  • Pop your pot upside down and pull each strand through the hole and tie together in one big knot, leaving it poking out the top.
  • Tie a very large knot in an additional piece of string or ribbon and thread the opposite way through your pot so the loose end is at the top and the big knot is underneath the flowerpot.
  • You’re now ready to hang your beautiful windchime in your garden and listen out for your very own chimes in the breeze!
